Android 4.2 Battery Drain
  11/26/2012 12:22:41 PM

Just like many Galaxy Nexus owners, I got my update to 4.2 ten days ago. My initial assessment was very good. I liked the changes. However, after a couple of days using it, I noticed that I wasn’t getting through a full day on one full charge. I first attributed it to how much I was playing with Photo Sphere. It turned out that wasn’t the case. After some searching, and testing, I determined it was some combination of four things, display brightness, Exchange, location services, and cards.

Last week, I started by removing the Exchange account, and re-adding it. Some people suggested that it solved their problem. Unfortunately, that didn’t do it for me. So, I went a step further. I changed my “Days to sync” from “Automatic” to “Three days.” In the same time, I dimmed my display down to the lowest. I’ve since switched it back to “Auto” and have not seen much excess battery drainage. The next thing I did was to turn off “Wi-Fi & mobile network location” for my Location Services.

The last thing I turned off was cards. The search function still works with cards turned off. I don’t currently use cards, so this was no loss for me.

I am glad to report that at the end of my day, I usually go to bed with over 30% left. I am slowly turning things back on, hoping to isolate the actual service that is sucking the life out of the phone.
